Dr. Cheng-Kai Lu - TEEP project descriptions

The Biomedical Artifi cial Intelligence & Robotics (BAIR) Lab, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), isnow recruiting senior college students (3rd and 4th year) and master students to do internships in 2022/2023.The internship duration is quite fl exible and can be determined in consultation with each candidate. The BAIRLab, supervised by Dr. Cheng-Kai Lu, is engaged in developing tailor-made artifi cial intelligence (AI) solutionsfor biomedical applications and robotics. In particular, the BAIR Lab closely cooperate with international R&Dteams from the UK (Edinburgh University), Malaysia (Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, UTP; UCSI University,UCSI), Singapore (Tan Tock Seng Hospital), India (Amity University Noida) individually in three aspects ofresearch works: music therapy (MT) robot, explainable artifi cial intelligence (XAI), and federated learning (FL)for diagnosis of Ophthalmic Diseases. Conducting these projects will allow us to realize "cross-domaininnovation" and "smart health" and to nurture a new generation of AI talents for Taiwan and the world.

Amultimodal emotion recognition for AI robotic system, an FL framework for retinal fl uid and layersegmentation model, and their corresponding XAI system are currently under investigation. To achieve theseobjectives, several critical techniques, including object detection, audio+/video emotion recognition, development of FL algorithms and deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and XAI methods (i.e., case-based reasoning) are required. Participating students can have the opportunity to build knowledge in deeplearning and robotics, IoT to design, build and test the corresponding developed system. Students areexpected to work with fellow students here at BAIR Lab under the guidance from a mentor. The students areexpected to produce solid research results and write a report before the end of the internship. After theinternship, those with excellent research capabilities can receive fi nancial support to pursue theirpostgraduate studies at NTNU.
